Kejriwal hammers BJP for 'hooliganism', accuses 'police inaction'

As political tensions rise ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Convenor and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of resorting to "hooliganism" and alleging that the Delhi Police, under the Union Home Ministry, has been turning a blind eye to such activities.

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Kejriwal asserted, “Home Minister Amit Shah has lost his temper, and just before elections, BJP is resorting to hooliganism. People are being beaten and thrashed, with many cases reported and videos circulating. Yesterday, Sanjay Singh revealed that BJP goons assaulted people, and when questioned about it, the Delhi Police claimed they received orders from higher authorities, rendering them powerless to intervene.”

Kejriwal further alleged that the police were filing “fake cases” against victims rather than apprehending the culprits. Urging the public to expose these acts of intimidation, he said, “I urge Delhi citizens to share their experiences using #AmitShahkiGundagardi and stand against BJP’s intimidation tactics.”

Complaint to Election Commission

Earlier in the day, Kejriwal wrote a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, expressing “grave concern” over the alleged harassment and intimidation of AAP volunteers by BJP workers in the New Delhi Assembly constituency.

In the letter, he stated, “I am writing to express my grave concern over the intimidation and harassment being meted out to our grass-root volunteers in the New Delhi Assembly Constituency at the hands of BJP workers and Delhi Police in the run-up to election day.”

Kejriwal highlighted instances of unlawful detention, physical abuse, and wrongful booking of AAP volunteers, specifically mentioning the case of a senior volunteer named Chetan.

“Yesterday, our senior volunteer Chetan (Resident of Princess Park Part-2) was unlawfully detained and booked under Section 126 of BNSS, 2023 at Tilak Marg Police Station, on the baseless and fictitious grounds that he has previous cases registered against him, while there are none. He was brazenly charged with actions that he never committed. He was also subjected to severe physical abuse by the Police officials to the point that he fainted and was subsequently rushed to Lady Harding Hospital,” Kejriwal wrote.

Kejriwal claimed that despite being framed, Chetan was granted bail after significant effort.

Delhi police targeting AAP volunteers

The AAP chief further accused the police of arbitrarily detaining, questioning, and harassing volunteers to suppress the party’s campaign efforts and discourage participation in election activities.

The Delhi Assembly elections are scheduled for February 5, with the counting of votes set to take place on February 8.

The AAP, which won a commanding 62 out of 70 seats in the 2020 Assembly polls, will seek to defend its majority against the BJP.

The Congress, once a formidable force with 15 consecutive years in power, has struggled in recent elections and failed to secure any seat in the last Assembly polls.
