AI is going to increase jobs: Piyush Goyal

The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry has pushed for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying “every decision-making” employee at his office has been asked to download the latest version of AI on their phones and laptops

Piyush Goyal has pushed for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying “every decision-making” employee at his office has been asked to download the latest version of AI on their phones and laptops

Contrary to popular opinion about Artificial Intelligence (AI) sneaking up and usurping human jobs, India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, said opportunities are, in fact, going to increase with the help of AI.

Calling it “an idea whose time has come”, Goyal said India is a nation that’s “always willing to adopt new technologies”, and so, should have no problem integrating AI into the fold of everyday life.

“I have told [everyone] at my office, every person at decision-making levels, to have the latest version of AI, ChatGPT or whatever else is available, on their phones or their laptops,” he quipped, adding that the only condition for its use is accrediting it for whichever information has been sourced through it.

“So we use it with a condition that any input sourced through AI should have its credit at the bottom, from wherever it has been generated or prepared with the support of AI...it should have been validated for,” the minister said at an industry chamber event.

Cautioning people against “naysayers” who blame AI for “eating up jobs”, Goyal asked them not to be deterred by rumours.

"AI will have its role...there will be the problem of unethical use of AI, so human intervention will be required to address that... This is only going to increase jobs...and Indians are agile and very smart… So I look upon this as a great opportunity; we must adopt it," he said.

Regardless of “short-term blips”, the minister said “it will be great for India in the long-run”.

In February, the finance ministry directed its officers not to download or use AI tools and apps such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek in office computers and devices, saying they pose confidentiality risks to data and documents.

On March 27, Union minister Jitendra Singh said that there is no specific prohibition on the use and adoption of AI-based tools by any government departments as this is an emerging technology with great potential in citizen-oriented web applications.

However, government functionaries are expected to exercise due diligence and caution to ensure safety, security and confidentiality of public information while using any digital technology or platform, he has said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
