According to airline sources, the Air India Group, with a fleet of 300 aircraft, currently operates 312 domestic and international routes and runs around 8,500 flights per week.
At present, Tata Group-owned Air India, which has merged with full-service carrier Vistara, boasts 67 wide-body aircraft, including seven from Vistara. The merged entity is now India’s largest international carrier and the second largest in the domestic market.
Sources noted that the combined Air India and Vistara fleet comprises 210 planes, serving 91 destinations and 174 routes, with approximately 5,600 weekly flights. Tata Group also owns Air India Express, which finalised its merger with AIX Connect on 1 October.
Air India has 80 narrow-body and 60 wide-body aircraft, while Vistara operates 63 narrow-body and seven wide-body planes. Air India Express adds another 90 narrow-body aircraft to the total.
Altogether, the Air India Group operates 300 planes and serves 103 destinations, split into 55 domestic and 48 international. Currently, the group runs 312 routes—160 domestic and 152 international—with about 8,500 flights each week.
The fleet comprises Boeing 777-300 ERs, 777-200 LRs, 787-8s, 787-9s, A320 family aircraft, and A350s. In September, Air India, Vistara, and AIX Connect collectively held just over 29 per cent of the domestic market, based on the latest official figures.
The group is expanding its operations, with plans for additional aircraft in the coming months.
On Tuesday, Air India pilots made in-flight announcements marking the significant milestone of Vistara's merger, highlighting that the "signature Vistara in-flight experience continues on the Vistara fleet," which can be identified by the code 'AI2'.
The announcement added: “With over 5,500 weekly domestic and international flights, a new Maharaja Club loyalty programme, and an expanding and modernising fleet, we are excited to offer more destinations and an enhanced travel experience.”
