In a Goods and Services Tax (GST) restructuring undertaken by the Finance Ministry, two tax slabs of 12 per cent and 28 per cent were axed and prices on nearly 400 products slashed down

The commerce and industry ministry has directed physical retail chains to prominently display and advertise discounts on various items that would result from the recent GST rate rationalisation.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) communicated to the Retailers Association of India to ensure that the GST reduction reflects clearly and prominently as GST discount in the receipt/bills and that major focus be given on high-impact products.

"Prominently display and advertise 'Discount due to GST' through their networks. For example - posters / flyers and ads (print, TV and online) through their own retail networks," it said.

The department has also suggested that sales figure be monitored and highlighted via various channels during the upcoming festive season, when sales are expected to boom.

In a Goods and Services Tax (GST) restructuring undertaken by the Finance Ministry, two tax slabs of 12 per cent and 28 per cent were axed and prices on nearly 400 products – from soaps to cars, shampoos to tractors and air conditioners – were slashed. The new GST rates will be effective from the first day of Navaratri on September 22.

Now, there are only two GST tax slabs in use – the 5 per cent and the 18 per cent slabs, while various everyday essentials like bread, milk and paneer have gone under the ‘no tax’ slab. Meanwhile, there is a 40 per cent ‘sin’ tax for a few luxury items.
