India’s Generation Z is projected to account for nearly $1.3 trillion in consumer spending by 2030, representing about 27 per cent of the country’s population, according to a report released by Redseer Strategy Consultants.

The report, titled Gen Z: Defining Trends, Influencing Spends, noted that people born between 1997 and 2012 are expected to play a major role in reshaping the country’s consumer landscape. It highlighted their strong inclination toward experiences, sustainability and digital convenience.

“Gen Z will make up a larger portion of the population and is expected to command $1.3 trillion in consumption by 2030. This generation rejects rigid labels and places high value on inclusivity, self-expression and authenticity. During this phase of self-discovery, they prioritise aesthetics and new experiences, which is reflected in their consumer behaviour,” the report said.

The study pointed to the growing influence of Gen Z in the beauty and personal care (BPC) sector, where their spending is forecast to reach nearly $19 billion by the end of the decade.

According to the report, one in two Gen Z women spend more than 20 per cent of her disposable income on beauty and personal care products. The number of products used has also increased substantially, with separate routines for skin, hair and body care becoming increasingly common.

Unlike earlier generations, Gen Z shoppers tend to favour products that address specific needs rather than focusing on particular ingredients. As a result, brand loyalty is relatively low, with many consumers frequently experimenting with different products.

The report also highlighted the rise of gender-neutral beauty trends, as more young men adopt skincare and cosmetic routines. Online searches for ‘men’s skincare routine’ have surged by 850 per cent over the past five years, indicating a growing interest in grooming among male consumers.

Men’s cosmetology is emerging as a distinct segment, with Gen Z men increasingly opting for treatments such as acne care, fillers, hair removal and eyebrow grooming to improve their appearance.

In the fashion sector, Gen Z is expected to account for nearly half of the apparel, footwear and accessories market by 2030. The report noted that fast-fashion items priced below Rs 1,000 remain, especially popular among this demographic.

Although Gen Z represents the largest user base on leading fashion e-commerce platforms in India, their average spending per purchase is roughly half that of millennials, suggesting a preference for more value-oriented shopping.

Fitness and wellness have also become key priorities for this generation. The report found that about one-third of Gen Z consumers spend at least 20 per cent of their income on fitness and sports-related activities.

The athleisure segment continues to expand rapidly, with sales doubling year on year, supported by the availability of affordable sportswear on online marketplaces. Six of the top ten sports footwear brands are priced between Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, highlighting the price sensitivity of this consumer group.

Interest in healthier diets and alternative protein sources is also on the rise. Around 40 per cent of regularly exercising Gen Z consumers prefer such options.

Meanwhile, listings of protein supplements on quick-commerce platforms increased by 230 per cent between 2024 and 2025, the report said.
“By 2030, Gen Z is expected to drive $40 billion in spending on fitness and sports,” Redseer added.
