India has initiated investigations into the alleged dumping of two Chinese products—a chemical used in the rubber industry and nylon filament yarn—according to notifications from the commerce ministry.

The ministry's investigative arm, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), is probing the dumping of nylon filament yarn from China and Vietnam, as well as TDQ (trimethyl dihydroquinoline).

Century Enka, Gujarat Polyfilms, and Oriilon India have filed an application for initiating an anti-dumping investigation into the yarn, while NOCIL Ltd has submitted a similar plea concerning TDQ.

According to two separate notifications from the DGTR, the directorate has initiated the probes "on the basis of the duly substantiated written application submitted" by the applicants.

If it is established that the dumping has caused material injury to domestic players, the DGTR will recommend the imposition of anti-dumping duties on these imports. The finance ministry will take the final decision on imposing such duties.

Anti-dumping probes are conducted by countries to determine whether domestic industries have been harmed by a surge in cheap imports.   As a countermeasure, they impose these duties under the multilateral regime of the Geneva-based World Trade Organization (WTO).

India has already imposed anti-dumping duties on several products to tackle cheap imports from various countries, including China.

The directorate has initiated 43 anti-dumping investigations in 2024 so far, of which 34 are against China. The other countries under investigation include Russia, Taiwan, and Japan.
