Indian equity benchmarks remained closed on Tuesday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti, with trading shut at both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50. According to the official calendar, trading in the equity, derivatives, or securities lending and borrowing (SLB) segments will now resume on Wednesday, April 15.
The holiday comes at a time when the Indian stock market, along with broader Asian markets, is taking a hit from the ongoing volatility in the Middle East region. After recovering and posting nearly six per cent gains last week, benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened Monday’s session with a loss of more than 2 per cent, following the failure of US-Iran peace talks in Pakistan on Sunday.
Stock traders, however, will have a partial window open on Tuesday, as the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) is expected to open from 5 pm to 11:55 pm.
Besides, most bank branches remained shut on Tuesday, according to Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar. Additionally, April 14 is also the last stock market holiday for the month of April. The next scheduled trading holiday falls on May 1 for Maharashtra Day.
Digital services such as internet banking, mobile banking, SMS banking and WhatsApp banking will function as per routine.
