Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 on September 17, bringing together leading global semiconductor companies, government representatives, state officials, industry experts and other stakeholders as India seeks to accelerate the development of its semiconductor ecosystem.

The three-day event will be held in New Delhi from September 17 to 19 under the theme 'Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem'. The conference is expected to provide a platform for discussions on India's growing capabilities across semiconductor manufacturing, design, packaging, supply chains and related technologies.

IT Secretary S Krishnan said the Prime Minister is proposed to inaugurate the event on September 17, underlining the government's continued focus on strengthening the domestic semiconductor industry.

“The event is proposed to be inaugurated by the PM on September 17, and we believe it will once again reiterate the commitment that the government has for the semiconductor sector,” Krishnan said.

The event comes at a significant time for India's semiconductor ambitions, with the government seeking to establish the country as a reliable destination for semiconductor manufacturing and electronics production. Building a domestic semiconductor ecosystem is also being viewed as important for reducing supply-chain vulnerabilities and strengthening India's position in the global technology landscape.

SEMICON India 2026 is expected to attract senior executives from major global semiconductor companies, along with policymakers, investors, technology specialists and representatives of state governments. The participation of global industry leaders is likely to provide opportunities to discuss investment, technology partnerships, manufacturing capacity and the development of a skilled workforce.

A roundtable involving global chief executive officers is also expected to be part of the event's agenda. Such interactions are likely to focus on the opportunities and challenges facing India's semiconductor sector, including the need for infrastructure, advanced manufacturing capabilities, supply-chain integration and talent development.

The theme, 'Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem', reflects India's attempt to move beyond individual semiconductor projects and develop an integrated ecosystem spanning the entire value chain. This includes chip design and fabrication as well as assembly, testing, packaging, equipment, materials and downstream electronics manufacturing.

The government has been seeking to attract investments into the sector through policy support and incentives, while encouraging collaboration between global companies and Indian firms. The development of semiconductor capabilities is also closely linked to India's broader ambitions in electronics manufacturing and emerging technologies.

The participation of state governments is expected to be significant as semiconductor projects require large-scale infrastructure, reliable power and water supplies, industrial land and efficient connectivity. States are increasingly competing to attract investments in this strategically important sector.

Industry experts at the three-day event are also expected to discuss global semiconductor trends, technological developments and the changing structure of international supply chains. With semiconductor demand rising across automobiles, consumer electronics, telecommunications, artificial intelligence and other industries, countries are seeking to build more resilient domestic and regional supply networks.

For India, SEMICON India has emerged as an important platform to showcase its semiconductor ambitions and connect policymakers with global industry leaders. The fifth edition is expected to build on the momentum generated by previous editions and provide further visibility to India's efforts to establish itself as a key player in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

The Prime Minister's proposed participation is expected to further underline the strategic importance the government attaches to the sector and its long-term goal of developing a globally competitive semiconductor industry in India.
