A glimpses of the Dummy Ballot Unit developed by IIT Guwahati.

In a groundbreaking collaboration between the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation Cell (SVEEP) of Kamrup Election District and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, an innovative 3D-printed dummy ballot unit has been introduced to enhance voter awareness and engagement.

Unveiled on April 22nd, 2024, at the IIT Guwahati campus, the inauguration of the dummy ballot unit witnessed the presence of esteemed dignitaries, including Keerthi Jalli, District Commissioner of Kamrup, Guwahati, Assam.

Crafted with the aim of familiarising citizens, particularly new and senior voters, with the intricacies of the voting process, the 3D-printed dummy ballot unit seeks to alleviate any apprehensions or uncertainties associated with voting. By providing a hands-on experience, the unit aims to encourage maximum voter participation

Keerthi Jalli, Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup, Guwahati, Assam, lauded the collaboration with IIT Guwahati, stating, "We commend IIT Guwahati for their collaboration and swift design and manufacturing of this highly practical tool. It is certain to aid individuals in gaining familiarity with the voting process, thereby bolstering their confidence and encouraging greater participation in democratic practices."

Utilising advanced 3D printing technology, the dummy ballot unit is constructed from PLA (polylactic acid), a biodegradable and eco-friendly material derived from corn starch.

In a remarkable achievement, researchers at IIT Guwahati developed and manufactured the device within a mere 48 hours, incorporating interactive features such as sound and light indicators to assist users during the voting process.

This initiative marks a pioneering effort in India by the IIT Guwahati team to create a 3D-printed dummy ballot unit. The use of PLA ensures that the unit is not only environmentally sustainable but also reusable, contributing to sustainable practices in voter education initiatives.

Prof. Ajeet Kumar, Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati, underlined the significance of the ballot unit, stating, "With its interactive features and biodegradable material, this innovative tool will serve as a valuable resource in educating citizens about the voting process."
