Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders recently engaged in a telephonic conversation with suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, garnering international attention across the nations.
Wilders, who leads the nationalist Freedom Party in the Netherlands, took to social media to express admiration for Sharma, hailing her as a symbol of freedom not just for India but for the entire free world.
In a post on X, Wilders lauded Sharma's courage in the face of adversity, emphasising that her loss of personal freedom and legal troubles in the past two years were unjustifiable as she had merely spoken the truth. He described her as a "brave lady" and underscored the importance of supporting individuals like her who stand up for their beliefs.
Sharma gained international prominence after making so called ‘controversial remarks’ about Prophet Mohammed in 2022, which sparked widespread protests within India as well as internationally. Despite facing challenges, she has continued to advocate for her beliefs, drawing support from figures like Wilders who admire her resilience.
This is not the first time Wilders has shown support for Sharma. In February, he sent her a personal message expressing solidarity, characterising her as a courageous leader facing threats from Islamists for speaking out. He urged freedom-loving individuals worldwide to stand by her, expressing his hope to meet her during a visit to India.
Wilders' Freedom Party (PVV) secured victory in last year's elections but fell short of a majority, necessitating coalition partnerships to form a government. Despite his popularity, the anti-Islam populist leader abandoned his bid for the Prime Minister's position due to the lack of unanimous support from coalition parties.
The exchange between Wilders and Sharma underscores the global reach of political discourse and the solidarity shared among leaders who advocate for similar ideologies.
The timing of Geert to get in touch with Nupur Sharms is needed to be highlighted as India is going into General Elections in less than 2 weeks from now which will be the first Phase out of seven of which results are to be declared on 4th of June.
They continue to navigate challenges and opposition, their alliance highlights the importance of standing firm in the face of adversity and upholding principles of freedom and truth.
