UP, Bihar, Maharashtra bag most ministerial berths

The new council of ministers under Prime Minister Narendra Modi features significant representation from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Maharashtra. Uttar Pradesh and Bihar lead with nine and four cabinet berths respectively, while Maharashtra has six.

Key appointments include ministers from various states, notably Rajnath Singh (UP), Nitin Gadkari (Maharashtra), and Jitan Ram Manjhi (Bihar), reflecting a diverse geographical distribution in the cabinet.


In Prime Minister Narendra Modi's new council of ministers, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have secured significant representation, while Maharashtra also holds a notable presence, particularly with upcoming assembly polls.

 

Uttar Pradesh, boasting the largest Lok Sabha contingent of 80 members, has clinched nine ministerial positions, including one Cabinet role. Bihar, on the other hand, has secured four cabinet positions out of a total of eight ministers representing the state.

 

Maharashtra claims six ministerial berths, inclusive of two Cabinet positions, while Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan each contribute five members to the council of ministers inaugurated on Sunday.

 

Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu each have three ministerial slots. Meanwhile, Odisha, Assam, Jharkhand, Telangana, Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala have secured two ministerial berths each.

 

Rajnath Singh stands as the sole cabinet minister from Uttar Pradesh. Gujarat boasts four cabinet ministers, including Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, and C R Paatil.

 

Bihar's four cabinet ministers feature former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi from HAM(S), Rajiv Ranjan Singh 'Lalan' from JD(U), Giriraj Singh from BJP, and Chirag Paswan from LJP (RV).

 

Madhya Pradesh claims three cabinet berths, occupied by former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Virendra Kumar, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, while Maharashtra is represented by Nitin Gadkari and Piyush Goyal in the cabinet.

 

Tamil Nadu boasts two prominent cabinet ministers, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, along with L Murugan as Minister of State. Murugan, a Rajya Sabha member from Madhya Pradesh, hails from Tamil Nadu.

 

Sitharaman and Jaishankar, Rajya Sabha members from Karnataka and Gujarat respectively, add further diversity to the council of ministers.

 

Rajasthan contributes three cabinet berths held by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Bhupender Yadav, and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, alongside Arjun Ram Meghwal as Minister of State (Independent Charge). Vaishnaw, originally from Rajasthan, represents Odisha in the Rajya Sabha.

 

Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram represent Odisha in the Cabinet, while Karnataka has two cabinet ministers - former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy and Pralhad Joshi.

 

Jagat Prakash Nadda, Sarbananda Sonowal, Annpurna Devi, and Kiren Rijiju represent Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh respectively in the cabinet.

 

Manohar Lal Khattar, K Ram Mohan Naidu, G Kishan Reddy, and Hardeep Singh Puri represent Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Punjab respectively in the cabinet. Puri, a Rajya Sabha member, represents Uttar Pradesh.

 

Among the Ministers of State (Independent Charge), RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary represents Uttar Pradesh, Shiv Sena's Prataprao Jadhav represents Maharashtra, Rao Inderjit Singh represents Haryana, Arjun Ram Meghwal represents Rajasthan, and Jitendra Singh represents Jammu and Kashmir.

 

Actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi, victorious in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, and senior BJP leader from Kerala George Kurian have been appointed Ministers of State.

 

Some members of the council hail from states different from their domicile.
