Actor Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency, which has now been finally released, three years after it was first announced, has opened to ₹2.4 crore, according to early estimates by Sacnilk.

The film, which features Kangana in the role of the former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, had about 2,500 shows across India.
It was released against Azaad, featuring Ajay Devgn’s nephew Amaan Devgan and Raveena Tandon’s daughter, Rasha Thadani.
Emergency recorded an overall occupancy of about 19.26 per cent on its first day, with about 467 shows in Mumbai and 657 shows in the National Capital Region. Emergency is among the lowest openers of her career, after Thalaivii (2021), which opened at ₹1.46 crore; Dhaakad, which reportedly earned ₹50 lakh on day one; and Tejas which opened at ₹1.25 crore.
The last few years haven’t been successful for the actor, who repeatedly describes herself as the highest-grossing female star of the industry.

Her film Simran, which was also a commercial failure, had opened to ₹2.77 crore. It was followed by Manikarnika (2019), which earned ₹8.75 crore.
Kangana has been awaiting a hit since her 2015 release Tanu Weds Manu Returns which earned ₹258 crore worldwide against a budget of ₹39 crore.
Emergency also marks her solo directorial debut. The movie also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, and Mahima Chaudhary in pivotal roles.
The film is also among the last appearances of late actor Satish Kaushik.
Meanwhile, Azaad, directed by Abhishek Kapoor has opened at ₹1.5 crore with around 2,200 shows across India. The film witnessed an occupancy of 15.02 per cent.
