As the curtains prepare to rise on Sanjay Leela Bhansali's grand debut in the streaming arena with "Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar," the spotlight shifts to the meticulous craftsmanship behind the exquisite costumes that have take to the screens.
Designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula, renowned for their opulent bridal wear in India, take center stage as they reveal their creative journey in bringing the world of "Heeramandi" to life.
"Heeramandi" will be available for streaming on the OTT platform Netflix starting May 1, 2024, Wednesday.
Drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources, including museum visits, old book covers, and the distinctive personal styles of legends like Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum, and Meena Kumari, Rimple and Harpreet set out on a quest to condense the essence of pre-Independence India.
"We wanted to relate it to different people from yesteryears," Harpreet said, emphasizing their endeavor to infuse each costume with historical authenticity and individual flair.
With an impressive count ranging from 280 to 320 costumes, the duo spared no effort in crafting the attire that resonated with the era's charm and elegance.
For Sonakshi Sinha, who portrays the courtesan Fareedan, Rimple disclosed the strategic use of dark hues intertwined with the actress's personal style.
From the flowing ghararas and lehengas adorning the women to the regal kurta pajamas and sherwanis draped on the men, every costume spoke designers' commitment to authenticity and storytelling.
Bhansali's vision for "Heeramandi" transcends mere entertainment; it is woven with threads of history, culture, and human emotions.
The attention to detail extends beyond the costumes to the sets, music, and performances, promising viewers an immersive journey into a bygone era.
Reflecting on their collaboration with Bhansali, the Narulas expressed gratitude for the creative freedom bestowed upon them, allowing them to delve deep into historical archives and museum collections to unearth forgotten textile treasures.
