Sunjay Kapur, businessman and ex-husband of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, has passed away at the age of 53 due to a heart attack, according to a reports. Kapur reportedly suffered the cardiac arrest while playing polo in England.
Sunjay was married to entrepreneur Priya Sachdev and is survived by three children—two from his marriage to Karisma and one with Priya. A well-known industrialist, he was the Chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading automotive systems manufacturer.
Noted author and columnist Suhel Seth confirmed Kapur's death on social media. In a condolence message on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Deeply saddened at the passing of @sunjaykapur: he passed away earlier today in England: a terrible loss and deepest condolences to his family and to his colleagues @sonacomstar …Om Shanti.”
In a poignant coincidence, Sunjay’s last social media post came just hours before his own passing, where he had expressed grief over the tragic Air India crash that killed over 200 people on Thursday afternoon.
Recently, Sunjay Kapur was elected as the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Northern Region. In this role, he was set to guide industrial and policy initiatives across seven states—Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand—as well as three Union Territories: Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Speaking about his vision for the region, Kapur had stated, “Our strategic roadmap focuses on six key priority areas to drive industrial growth and policy reforms — policy advocacy, growth and inclusiveness, strengthening MSMEs, membership engagement, skill development, and innovation and sustainability.”
He emphasised strengthening the link between MSMEs, startups, and academia to harness the region’s strengths and foster economic development.
Personal Life and Marriage to Karisma Kapoor
Sunjay Kapur married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The couple had two children together. Their marriage faced turbulence early on, and in 2005, they approached the Delhi High Court seeking divorce. The court advised them to attempt reconciliation.
Karisma moved back to Mumbai in 2010, shortly after the birth of their son Kiaan. In 2014, the couple formally decided to part ways and their divorce was finalised in June 2016. Following his divorce from Karisma, Sunjay went on to marry Priya Sachdev, with whom he had a son. He maintained a relatively private life but remained active in business and industry circles until his sudden demise.
