Meghalaya has carved a notable niche on the global documentary filmmaking map with Achik Kol – The Uncharted Caves of South Garo Hills, which recently secured first place in the Professional Category at the prestigious 19th International Congress of Speleology held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The film delves into the cave ecosystems of the Garo Hills, following explorers, scientists, and local cavers as they navigate the vast underground landscapes. Among the most remarkable discoveries featured in the documentary is a prehistoric whale fossil found in Tolegre, a finding hailed as a significant contribution to scientific knowledge.

Directed by Gregory Allya Warjri and produced by NOMADS Film, Achik Kol has already received international acclaim. It has been screened at the Hidden Earth UK Caving Conference and Le Festival des Voyageurs d’Ici in Switzerland. A special screening will also be held in Shillong, where the film is expected to engage both students and the wider public.

Beyond its cinematic success, the documentary has drawn global attention to Meghalaya’s rich, yet little-explored, subterranean heritage. Its international recognition is being seen as a tribute to the region’s unique natural landscape.

The documentary is the result of a collaborative effort by a dedicated team comprising Iainangsan Warjri, Lovingstar Khongkai, Derric Lyndem, Dalariti Nongpiur, Benji Syiem, and Sunny Dohling, along with support from the Core Geo team and local cavers.

“This win is not just a recognition of the film's visual and narrative brilliance, but also a proud moment for Meghalaya and its emerging voice in scientific exploration and storytelling,” said a spokesperson from the production team.
