Papon, the Assamese singer, has pleaded with people all around the world to help the communities affected by the massive floods in Assam. The singer has emphasised in his video message posted on X how serious this situation has become this year as compared to the regular rains and floods that occur every year in Assam.
With regard to the devastation caused, Papon mentioned villages submerged, loss of lives, missing persons, and also deaths in livestock. He asked all people in India and outside India to respond immediately in offering assistance, stressing that all the efforts have been done by local people but they need more support in dealing with the situation.
The number of deaths due to the floods is now 68 as per the recent figures made available on Monday through the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System. As per the confirmation by the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state ministers will be engaged in rehabilitation works and the immediate relief will be provided to the severely affected districts such as Sivasagar, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
Sarma also mentioned about the ongoing work by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in restoring power supply to the areas which have been badly hit, like Sivasagar, Jorhat, Charaideo, Dhubri, and Bongaigaon. The supply of electricity was stopped in view of safety measures, and the engineers are conducting tests for restoration of power supply in phases.
The Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal termed the situation as critical, and said that the centre and state governments were working together for rescue and relief operations. According to Sonowal, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself is supervising the situation and has talked with the Chief Minister Sarma to ensure complete support from the central government. As per instructions of the Prime Minister, an inter-ministerial team of high officials has reached Assam.
