Dasgupta never pursued a career in film after Pather Panchali, she rather choose to live a private life and worked as a teacher, remaining out of the limelight.

Uma Dasgupta, the actress who brought to life the character of ‘Durga’ in Satyajit Ray’s classic film Pather Panchali, passed away on Monday at a private hospital in Kolkata.

She was 84 and had been battling cancer for some time, according to family sources. She is survived by her daughter.

Dasgupta’s portrayal of Durga in the 1955 film, adapted from Bibhutibhusan Bandyopadhyay’s novel, captured the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Her role as Durga, the elder sister of Apu, remains one of the most cherished in cinematic history.

Her depiction of the young girl, notably in the iconic scene where she drenches herself in rain and later picks mangoes with her brother Apu, became one of the most memorable moments in Indian cinema.

Discovered by Ray at a school performance, she was cast in the role at just 14. Ray, impressed by her natural acting abilities, saw her as a perfect fit for the character.

"Uma took to the character like a fish to water," said Sandip Ray, Satyajit Ray’s son, recalling how she delivered a flawless performance in a single take, often requiring no further direction.

Despite her widespread acclaim, Dasgupta never pursued a career in film after Pather Panchali. She chose to live a private life and worked as a teacher, remaining out of the limelight.

Sandip Ray, who met Dasgupta on occasion at functions related to Pather Panchali, said, “I don't know why she did not act in any more films.”

Her decision to remain away from the film industry has remained a subject of curiosity.
