Months after the cancellation of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” sequel, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar is returning to the supernatural genre.
While the “scream queen” will always be synonymous with her iconic run as Buffy Summers from 1997 to 2003, the hopes of her return to the franchise were dashed after the sequel of the Hulu series was abruptly cancelled in March 2026. The reboot was announced in February 2025.
Now, Gellar has officially signed on to headline “Thud”, an upcoming supernatural romance directed by Mali Elfman of “Next Exit’ fame. In a wild twist on the genre, Gellar is set to portray the Grim Reaper, starring alongside Rudy Pankow, who will take on the role of the Devil.

Based on a script by Noga Pnueli, “Thud” centers on a chaotic "meet-cute" between the Grim Reaper and the Devil at a three-day destination wedding. As both supernatural entities independently plot to unleash havoc on the celebration, they unexpectedly end up falling for one another.
The film will be shot in Los Angeles and is spearheaded by producers David Grove Churchill Viste and Derek Bishé.
Gellar is also set to voice a role in the Tubi animated series “Breaking Bear”.
