Actor-singer Selena Gomez is set to return as Alex Russo in the second season of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, a continuation of the popular Disney Channel franchise that first aired in 2007.
The spin-off series, created by Todd J Greenwald, launched in 2024, reuniting fans with familiar faces from Wizards of Waverly Place, including Gomez, who appeared in two episodes of the first season. The revival is executive produced by Gomez herself.
The Emmy-nominated actor, now 32, will feature in the second season. She confirmed her involvement by posting a photograph on Instagram holding a wand with the caption: “Just feels right.”
The show follows Billie (played by Janice LeAnn Brown) as she navigates the complexities of joining the Russo family, which turns increasingly chaotic as more young wizards gain powers. Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko) also receive magical abilities, thrusting Justin (David Henrie) into the role of mentor for three competing family wizards.
“As the stakes rise inside and outside the family, a mysterious new threat emerges — one that could unravel the Russos forever,” reads the show’s official synopsis.

Return to the wand-wielding family favourite
The original Wizards of Waverly Place aired from 2007 to 2012, spanning four seasons. It featured Gomez alongside David Henrie, Jake T Austin, Jennifer Stone, David DeLuise, and Maria Canals-Barrera as members of the Russo family, who own a restaurant in New York while secretly being wizards.
DeLuise portrayed the family patriarch and wizard, guiding his three children in mastering their powers. Ultimately, the child who proved most adept was entitled to keep the family wand.
Wizards Beyond Waverly Place picks up that legacy with a fresh storyline, enhanced visual effects, and a blend of nostalgia and new adventures.
Gomez’s return is expected to add depth to the narrative and draw long-time fans back to the fantasy sitcom, which blends magic, teenage angst and family dynamics with Disney’s signature warmth.
