At least 11 people were injured in a mass stabbing incident at a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan, on Saturday. Authorities confirmed that six of the victims were in critical condition, and the suspect believed to have carried out the attack is now in custody.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said the attack appeared to be a random act of violence. “Eleven is 11 too many, but thank God it wasn’t more,” Shea told reporters during a press briefing outside the store, where emergency vehicles and uniformed responders remained on the scene. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and disbelief. Tiffany DeFell, 36, a resident of Honor located about 25 miles from Traverse City, recounted the terrifying moments as she and her sister sat in the parking lot. “It was really scary. Me and my sister were just freaking out,” she said. “This is something you see out of the movies. It’s not what you expect to see where you’re living.”

Munson Healthcare confirmed via social media that all 11 victims were receiving treatment at the largest hospital in northern Michigan. According to hospital spokesperson Megan Brown, all the injured had sustained stab wounds. As of late Saturday, six victims were in critical condition, while the remaining five were listed as serious. Sheriff Shea said that the weapon used in the attack appeared to be a folding-style knife. Earlier in the day, Michigan State Police confirmed the suspect had been apprehended. While authorities believe the individual is a resident of Michigan, no further details about their identity or motive have been disclosed.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a statement expressing solidarity with those affected: “Our thoughts are with the victims and the community reeling from this brutal act of violence.” Walmart, in an official statement, condemned the attack and pledged full cooperation with investigators. “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we’re thankful for the swift action of first responders,” the company said.

The FBI also responded to the situation, with Deputy Director Dan Bongino posting on social media that the bureau was on-site to provide support as needed.

Traverse City, located on the coast of Lake Michigan, is a popular vacation destination known for its annual cherry festival, scenic wineries, and historic lighthouses. It lies roughly 40 kilometers east of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, which has shaken the tight-knit northern Michigan community.
