Emergency workers extinguish fire in the debris of a private house that was destroyed in a Russian rocket strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in Markhalivka, Kyiv region, Ukraine.

As many as 13 people have been killed in Kyiv after Russia launched a massive drone attack on Ukraine's capital overnight, officials said.

Reports said that powerful explosions rocked Kyiv in the early hours of Thursday morning, illuminating the sky and leaving behind a trail of destruction in several districts of the city. The attack signals the successful operation of the Russian forces carried deep inside the Ukrainian territory after taking 5 villages in the past week near the eastern border of the country.

Among the dead were three children aged two, 14 and 17, said Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city administration. “Everything is destroyed,” said Tkachenko.“ Tonight, Kyiv is under massive attack by the Russian state.

Among the damaged properties was the European Union delegation’s building in Kyiv, EU Commissioner Marta Kos said. Kos, in her post on X, said, “The EU Delegation in Kyiv was damaged by today’s Russian strikes on civilian areas.”

“I strongly condemn these brutal attacks, a clear sign that Russia rejects peace and chooses terror,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian air forces said they recorded Russian strikes at nearly 13 locations, while the debris had fallen at 26 locations. It also said that 563 of nearly 600 drones and 26 of 31 missiles launched by the Russian forces were intercepted.

In a post on X, Zelensky sent his condolences to the loved ones of the victims and said the Russian strikes were “a clear response to everyone in the world who, for weeks and months, has been calling for a ceasefire and for real diplomacy”.

Russian forces have once again intensified their aerial attacks, which are followed by the ground incursion, the tactic that the Russian forces utilise during their raids and offensives against Ukrainian armed forces.
