Bandits in Nigeria have killed several people and kidnapped dozens after attacking a mosque in the Nigerian town of Unguwar Mantau and setting homes ablaze in nearby villages.

As many as 50 people were killed in a widespread attack on Muslim communities in Nigeria's Katsina state. The attack was carried out by the members of the so-called Bandits, who have killed people from all sections of society living across the northern and central Nigerian parts.

Reports said that the gunmen first targeted a mosque in the town of Unguwar Mantau, where some 30 worshippers were killed. Then, the attackers killed an additional 20 people and burnt homes in nearby villages. The police spokesperson in Katsina village, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said criminal bandits were successfully intercepted by the authorities. The measure successfully prevented another assault on two villages.

Though the bandits had already set homes ablaze in some other villages and kidnapped dozens of people. The eyewitnesses said that Bandits dragged and pulled away women and girls, taking them as hostages.

The bandits in Nigeria have often carried out the raids in the villages, kidnapped residents for money and burnt down the homes after they carried out what could be described as crimes against Humanity. The violence in northwestern Nigeria began over the distribution of water and grazing land between the farmers and herders, which has now morphed into organised criminal gangs.

Cattle rustling, kidnappings and extortion targeting farming communities now provide steady revenue to armed groups. Earlier this month, Nigerian security forces neutralised hundreds of the Gang members in a preventive strike across the same north-western region.
