US President Donald Trump on Tuesday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to wish him on his 75th birthday. Modi turns 75 on Wednesday.
This was the first direct conversation between the two leaders since Trump imposed a 50 per cent tariff on India for importing crude from Russia. During the call, they spoke about India–US relations and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
After the call, Modi thanked Trump in a post on X. He wrote, “Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday. Like you, I am also fully committed to taking the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership to new heights. We support your initiatives towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.”
The call came on a day when negotiators from both countries resumed discussions to finalise the interim trade deal. Talks are expected to conclude by October. Earlier, the discussions had stalled after Trump’s punitive measures against India. His top trade advisors had accused New Delhi of fuelling Russia’s war in Ukraine by purchasing its crude oil.
In recent weeks, however, Trump softened his tone on India. He called the India–US partnership a very special relationship and described Modi as a good friend.
