The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the Somali government to enhance peace and stability in the country.
This pledge was made on Saturday as Somalia celebrated the 65th anniversary of the founding of its national army.
Sivuyile Bam, Acting Head of AUSSOM, extended his congratulations to the Somali National Army (SNA) on the significant milestone and called on international partners to rally behind President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's efforts to build a capable and modern military force.
In a statement issued from Mogadishu, Bam emphasised the importance of equipping the SNA with the necessary tools and resources to continue their operations against illegal armed groups.
He stressed that strengthening the SNA remains critical to ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
"We must continue to strengthen the Somali National Army by providing the necessary equipment and resources needed to sustain operations against illegal forces," Bam stated.
He further reiterated AUSSOM’s dedication to cooperating with Somali authorities to protect civilians, secure essential supply routes, and liberate territories still under the control of al-Shabab militants.
“As Somali security forces increasingly take on the responsibility for safeguarding the country, AUSSOM remains confident in their growing ability to protect the population and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he added.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud also issued a statement commending the army's efforts and sacrifices in combatting terrorism and reclaiming land from extremist groups.
He highlighted the army’s unwavering determination to defend Somalia’s sovereignty and to lay the groundwork for a safer and more prosperous future for generations to come.
