AU urges world support for Somalia’s fight against al-Shabaab.

The African Union Commission's newly elected Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has called for increased international funding to support stabilisation efforts in Somalia.

Youssouf made the appeal during his first visit to Somalia since assuming office, emphasising the urgent need for financial support for the African Union (AU) Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia.

Speaking from Mogadishu, Youssouf highlighted the funding challenges facing the AU mission and expressed concern over the potential consequences of insufficient international support.

He stressed that Somalia should not be abandoned, noting that the country's stability is crucial not only for its people but also for the wider international community.

Youssouf assured that he had already begun discussions with partners in Addis Ababa, the AU's headquarters, to secure greater commitment to Somalia’s peace efforts.

He pledged to continue engaging with Somalia’s international partners to strengthen the country’s fight against the militant group al-Shabaab.

During a joint press briefing with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Youssouf described the AU mission in Somalia as being in a period of transition.

He urged the international community to maintain its support, asserting that the current challenges can be overcome with dedication, cooperation, and adequate resources.

The chairperson also underscored the broader significance of Somalia's stability, highlighting the role of international assistance in combating piracy in the Gulf of Aden, the Guardafui Channel, and the Somali Sea.

These waters are vital maritime routes, and maintaining their security is essential for global trade.

President Mohamud echoed Youssouf's optimism, emphasising that Somalia’s experience exemplifies the AU’s vision of “African solutions to African problems.”

He expressed confidence that the collaboration with the new AU leadership would help address the obstacles facing the peace mission.

James Swan, the UN Secretary-General's acting special representative for Somalia, reaffirmed the UN's commitment to working alongside the AU.

Swan recognised the critical role of the AU mission in supporting and motivating Somali forces, stressing the importance of continued international backing.
