Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has announced that his country will recognise the Palestinian state at the upcoming annual UN General Assembly session taking place in New York later this month.
Belgium has joined the list of countries, including France, Britain, and Spain, which have announced they recognise the independent status of the Palestinian state. A move welcomed by the majority of the international community, while objected to by the United States and Israel. In a post on X, Prevot said Belgium will join other countries in recognising Palestinian statehood while adopting a package of sanctions against Israel.
He wrote, “Firm sanctions are being imposed on the Israeli government. Any anti-Semitism or glorification of terrorism by Hamas supporters will also be more strongly condemned.”
He said that the recognition was the right step to uphold international law, not to punish peace-loving Israeli people. Israel has continued its occupation of the Palestinian territories and rejects a withdrawal that would allow for an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-1967 borders.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s ambitions have put the entire Middle East region on edge, as he wants to create a biblical-times-greater Israel at the expense of innocent civilians.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the United States, a staunch backer of the Israeli regime, revoked the visas of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) members and the Palestinian Authority (PA) ahead of the gathering.
The move came amid growing international outrage over Israel's conduct in the Gaza invasion, where more than 63,500 people, including children and women, have been killed since October 2023. Israel’s full blockade of the Gaza Strip, in place since early March, has created catastrophic conditions for the enclave’s 2.4 million residents, leading to famine, widespread disease and the collapse of essential services.
