Chinese Premier Li Qiang has expressed a keen interest in advancing the China-Nepal Belt and Road Cooperation during a message to newly appointed Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

Premier Li extended heartfelt congratulations to Oli, pointing out the desire to build on previous agreements between the nations to bolster their strategic partnership.

In his message, Premier Li reiterated China’s commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a cornerstone project of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The initiative aims to enhance connectivity, trade, and collaborative efforts in various sectors including economy, environment, technology, and culture. The BRI memorandum of understanding between China and Nepal lays the groundwork for this multifaceted cooperation.

Premier Li expressed his aspiration for continued progress in the Nepal-China friendly strategic partnership, focusing on development and prosperity.

He highlighted that the bilateral relations are founded on peaceful coexistence, equality, and mutual benefits, reinforcing the win-win nature of their collaboration.

The relationship between Nepal and China was significantly upgraded during President Xi Jinping’s visit to Nepal in 2019. At that time, both nations agreed to elevate their ties to a strategic partnership for development and prosperity.

This enhancement allows for expanded defense cooperation while continuing traditional methods of collaboration, according to local media reports.

The appointment of KP Sharma Oli as Nepal’s Prime Minister marks his fourth term in office. Oli, seen as a pro-China leader, faces the challenge of bringing political stability to the Himalayan nation. He succeeds Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, who lost a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives.

On Tuesday, Indian Ambassador Naveen Srivastava, US Ambassador Dean R. Thompson, and Chinese Ambassador Chen Song separately visited Prime Minister Oli at his office in Singhdurbar to extend their best wishes and congratulations.

Oli’s return to power comes at a critical time for Nepal, which is navigating complex geopolitical dynamics and seeking to balance its relationships with major powers including China, India, and the United States.

His leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in steering the country towards stability and development.

The emphasis on the Belt and Road Cooperation highlights China’s strategic interests in the region and its ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with Nepal.

According to experts the successful implementation of these projects could significantly impact Nepal’s infrastructure and economic landscape, aligning with the broader goals of the BRI.
