The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, has directed a comprehensive joint investigation into the recent terrorist attack on Chinese nationals, following Beijing's call for swift action to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel working in the country.
The attack occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where an explosives-laden vehicle targeted a bus carrying Chinese workers associated with the Dasu hydropower project. This project, located north of Islamabad, is funded by the World Bank and executed by China Gezhouba. Five Chinese nationals were among the six individuals killed in the attack, marking the second suicide bombing on Chinese workers in the region since 2021.
During an emergency meeting in Islamabad, Prime Minister Sharif chaired discussions with federal ministers, military leaders, and provincial officials to address the security concerns raised by the attack.
Sharif extended his condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to combating terrorism, emphasising the enduring bond between Pakistan and China. He praised the swift response of security agencies and local residents in saving lives and expressed determination to bring the perpetrators to justice.
In response to China's concerns, Pakistan pledged to accelerate the investigation, strengthen security measures for Chinese personnel and projects, and ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in the country.
Chinese officials urged Pakistan to expedite the hunt for the attackers, punish them under the law, and enhance security measures for Chinese assets and individuals. The meeting also emphasised the need for a regional approach to counter terrorism and reiterated Pakistan's resolve to eliminate terrorism from its soil.
Army chief General Asim Munir echoed the commitment to eradicate terrorism, highlighting Pakistan's resilience in the face of security challenges. He reassured that every effort would be made to safeguard foreign citizens, especially Chinese nationals contributing to Pakistan's development. The meeting concluded with a unified pledge to combat terrorism comprehensively, leveraging all available resources.
Following the meeting, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar announced that a joint investigation team would probe the suicide bombing, underscoring Pakistan's unwavering determination to eliminate terrorism.
Tarar emphasised the government's commitment to protecting Chinese nationals and sensitive installations, stating that no effort would be spared in ensuring their safety.
The Counter Terrorism Department of KPK Police has initiated its investigation, while stringent security measures remain in place for Chinese nationals across various projects in Pakistan.
