According to a press release from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar’s participation in the G20 FMM aims to bolster India’s engagement with G20 nations while amplifying the voice of the Global South. The MEA further stated that he is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings on the margins of the FMM.

South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency on 1 December 2024, which will continue until November 2025. The theme for its presidency—Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability—guides the priorities of the Working Groups in both the Sherpa and Finance Tracks, shaping the high-level deliverables.

The G20 is an international forum comprising major developed and developing economies, seeking to address global economic and financial challenges. Its members represent approximately 85 per cent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), over 75 per cent of international trade, and about two-thirds of the global population.

The grouping includes 19 countries—Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States—along with the European Union and the African Union.

The G20 operates without a permanent secretariat, with the presidency rotating annually among member nations.
