In a significant development, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has decided to replace the federal prosecutor handling a high-profile case involving an alleged murder-for-hire plot against a prominent Khalistani leader.
The case, filed by federal prosecutor Damian Williams, involves Vikash Yadav, a former officer with India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), who is accused of orchestrating the plot.
Trump’s nomination of Jay Clayton, former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as the District Attorney for the Southern District of New York, has raised eyebrows. Clayton, if confirmed by the Senate, will replace Williams, who traditionally submits his resignation when there is a change in presidential leadership.
The case that Williams filed against Yadav alleges that he worked with Nikhil Gupta, a co-conspirator charged last year, to hire a hitman to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Khalistani leader.
Gupta was extradited from the Czech Republic earlier this year and is currently facing legal proceedings in New York. The FBI has issued a "Wanted" poster for Yadav, who remains in India facing other charges, including kidnapping and extortion.
In response to Trump’s nomination of Clayton, the president praised him for his work at the SEC, stating, "Jay is going to be a strong fighter for the truth as we Make America Great Again."
Clayton’s appointment is particularly noteworthy due to his expertise in financial cases, particularly those related to Wall Street, as the Southern District of New York has jurisdiction over high-profile financial and investment fraud cases.
While Williams’ resignation is expected by the end of January, the legal proceedings related to Yadav and Gupta will continue under the guidance of the office's lawyers until a decision is made by the new prosecutor and Attorney General.
Trump’s controversial selection of Matt Gaetz, a former member of Congress, as his Attorney General has also added a layer of intrigue to the future handling of such cases.
Yadav’s case is particularly sensitive due to its political implications. The plot allegedly involved hiring a professional criminal to kill Pannun, but the individual they approached was an undercover government agent. Yadav and Gupta now face serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder.
Despite the political undertones, the case has continued to draw attention due to its high-profile nature and the involvement of RAW, India’s intelligence agency, which is known for its role in sensitive national security matters.
