Torrential rains pounded portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Monday evening, which lead to flash flooding in New York City and northern New Jersey, forcing authorities to send out emergency alerts and evacuations.
Governor Phil Murphy has issued a state of emergency. "I am issuing a State of Emergency due to flash flooding and excessive levels of rainfall in certain areas of the state," Murphy tweeted on X (formerly Twitter). "Please remain indoors and do not travel unnecessarily. Stay safe, New Jersey.
The National Weather Service had issued flash flood warnings in all five boroughs of New York City, as storms dumped more than an inch of rain on areas of Staten Island and Manhattan by early evening, with additional rains forecast for later tonight.

New York City authorities told residents in basement flats to be prepared for immediate evacuation. If you are in a basement flat, stay alert. Flash flooding can happen with little warning, even at night," New York City Emergency Management posted on X. "Keep a phone, flashlight, and Go Bag nearby. Be ready to move to higher ground."
The Manhattan Chelsea area reported 1.47 inches of rain at 7:30 p.m., and Staten Island reported 1.67 inches, according to the city's emergency reports. Additional rain was forecasted deeper into the evening, NBC said. Authorities are monitoring the situation, they have cautioned people to be vigilant if conditions deteriorate.
