The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed serious concern over the death and injuries that have occurred due to the clash between the security forces and the protesters in Rawalakot during the early stage of the parliamentary election in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The human rights commission expressed its serious concern about the situation in a statement made through Twitter, where it mentioned that these casualties remind people of the heavy human cost of regional tensions.
Whereas appreciating the responsibilities of law-enforcing agencies in keeping order, the HRCP made it clear that state powers should in no way supersede the basic human rights to life and to assemble and express themselves freely. The HRCP demanded that an investigation be done as soon as possible into the death and injuries that had occurred. As the future voting sessions approach, they appealed to authorities to practice restraint and avoid any confrontation and instead safeguard lives and build trust in the electoral process.
The above-stated development is in light of growing tension in the area. In Rawalakot, protests amid elections became heated as security forces tried to disperse the protesters, and reports emerged that live ammunition was used against protesters. Similarly, there have been incidents of similar nature in Mirpur, with security forces reportedly using force against protesters once again. The conduct of the security agencies has been widely condemned by activists, political organisations, and human rights organisations.
