ICJ to rule on halting Israel’s Gaza war today

This request is part of a broader case brought by South Africa, accusing Israel of genocide.

South Africa's appeal seeks a Gaza ceasefire and an end to Israel's offensive against Hamas, stressing the need to protect Palestinians.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to deliver a critical ruling on Friday regarding South Africa's plea to halt Israel's military operations in Gaza, particularly focusing on Rafah.

South Africa's appeal aims to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and stop Israel's ongoing offensive against Hamas, citing the necessity to ensure the survival of Palestinians.

This request is part of a broader case brought by South Africa, accusing Israel of genocide.

The plea highlights the urgency to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.

Israeli media, including The Times of Israel, reported on Thursday that Israeli officials are bracing for the aftermath of the ruling.

There is concern that the ICJ could mandate a cessation of the Rafah offensive or even an outright halt to the war, which is now nearing its eighth month.

Although the ICJ’s rulings are binding, the court lacks enforcement power.

However, its decisions carry significant international weight and could further isolate Israel diplomatically, particularly among its allies.

Adding to the legal pressures, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced on Monday its intent to seek arrest warrants for top Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Hamas officials.

In anticipation of the ICJ decision, an Israeli government spokesperson reiterated the country’s stance on its military actions in Gaza.

“No power on Earth will stop Israel from protecting its citizens and going after Hamas in Gaza,” the spokesperson asserted.

Meanwhile, the conflict continues to take a heavy toll.

Health officials and Hamas media reported that 60 Palestinians were killed in aerial and ground strikes across the Gaza Strip.

Intense combat between Israeli forces and Hamas fighters rages in various areas of Rafah.

Residents described Israeli tanks advancing further into Rafah's southeastern region, reaching the western district of Yibna and continuing operations in three eastern suburbs.
