In a bold defiance of Iranian maritime control, two US guided-missile destroyers have successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. This is the first time it happened since the outbreak of the conflict, coming on the heels of the typical pronouncements by President Donald Trump, that America has started "clearing out" the strategic passageway.

According to reports, the warships passed through the strait without any issues. In addition, the mission did not involve any consultation with Iran, thereby escalating the already existing tension regarding the vital route.

President Trump used the Truth Social website to make an announcement on the mission that he considered a favour to countries like China, Japan, and France. He claimed these countries lacked the "courage or will" to secure the passage themselves. Despite the success of the transit, Trump acknowledged the persistent danger posed by Iranian sea mines in a channel that handles roughly a fifth of the world’s crude oil. He suggested that Iran is "losing big" and that their only remaining leverage is the threat of a vessel "bunking" into a mine.

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively throttled by Tehran since the onset of US and Israeli air strikes on February 28. While the reopening of the shipping lane was a primary condition of the fragile ceasefire established earlier this week, the maritime situation remained a stalemate until this latest naval manoeuvre.

While the warships moved through the strait, senior diplomats from both Washington and Tehran were reportedly beginning their first rounds of negotiations in Pakistan. These talks are seen as a desperate attempt to de-escalate a conflict that has devastated the Middle East and destabilised global markets.

Adding to his commentary on the situation, Trump also claimed that empty tankers are currently racing towards the United States from across the globe to purchase oil, though he offered no specific evidence to support the surge in traffic. For now, Washington officials have remained tight-lipped, declining to offer formal statements to the press regarding the specifics of the naval transit.
