India has abstained from voting on the United Nations General Assembly resolution on the situation in Afghanistan on the pretext that, without new initiatives, it is unlikely to deliver positive results for the people. The text titled “The situation in Afghanistan” was adopted by a vote of 116 in favour to 2 against (Israel, United States), with 12 abstentions.

India’s permanent representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, said his country is closely monitoring the developments in Afghanistan and called for a proper action plan against the entities and individuals designated by the UN so they can no longer exploit the Afghan soil.

Parvathaneni said, "India is closely monitoring the security situation in Afghanistan, and outfits like Al Qaeda and their affiliates, ISIL and their affiliates, including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, must not be allowed to exploit Afghan soil for terrorism.”

Harish said, “India’s instant primacies in Afghanistan include the provision of humanitarian assistance and the execution of capacity-building initiatives for the Afghan people.

India has been providing humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover of the country. India has supplied around 50,000 metric tons of wheat, over 330 metric tons of medicines and vaccines, 40,000 litres of the pesticide Malathion, and 58.6 metric tons of other essential items.

India criticised the United Nations' inaction to “address the growing issues in the country, calling for more balanced and nuanced approaches in post-conflict contexts.”

Harish added, “No new policy instruments have been introduced to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan since August 2021.”
