India urges Bangladesh to safeguard Hindus against attacks

India has called upon Bangladesh to take immediate action to protect its minority Hindu community following a surge in targeted attacks.

India calls out Bangladesh over growing attacks on Hindus.

India has called upon Bangladesh to take immediate action to protect its minority Hindu community following a surge in targeted attacks.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly criticized the escalating violence, emphasizing that such incidents cannot be downplayed as mere media exaggerations, as suggested by some in Bangladesh.

India’s remarks came after Bangladesh dismissed the accusations as "unfounded" and maintained that these claims do not reflect the overall harmony among the country’s diverse population.

During a press briefing on Friday, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal voiced India’s concerns over the rising incidents of violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.

He pointed out that these attacks were not isolated, but part of a broader trend of increasing extremism and intolerance. Jaiswal urged the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, to take full responsibility for safeguarding the rights and security of all minorities in the country.

The MEA's statement reflects growing frustration in India over what is seen as a lack of accountability by Bangladesh in addressing the attacks. India has repeatedly raised the issue with Bangladesh, pressing for stronger measures to ensure the safety of its Hindu community, who have reportedly been subjected to violence and intimidation in recent months.

The Indian government has made it clear that this is not a matter of political rhetoric or media sensationalism, but a legitimate concern about the safety and well-being of a vulnerable minority group.

In response, Bangladesh’s government has rejected the allegations, arguing that they misrepresent the reality of the situation. Officials have pointed to the long-standing interfaith harmony that exists in the country, which they claim is not accurately reflected by these reports of violence.

However, critics argue that the government’s failure to take decisive action against the perpetrators of these attacks has contributed to a sense of insecurity among Hindus in Bangladesh.

The call for action from India underscores the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for Bangladesh to live up to its responsibilities under international human rights standards.

The increasing reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh have raised alarm not only within the Indian government but also among human rights groups, who are calling for a more proactive stance from the Bangladeshi authorities.
