The United States and Iran have maintained peace for the second straight day after two weeks of escalations that saw both sides exchanging military strikes despite the signing of a peace memorandum on June 17.
The United States military halted its attacks against Iran, leading Tehran to stop its retaliatory measures in the region.
Reports on Sunday claimed that this pause happened because the United States Army was running low on ammunition.
President Trump, while addressing the media, rejected the claims that the country’s armed forces were facing ammo shortages amidst the engagement with Iran.
He said, “US stockpiles are vast and exceed what is needed.”
Tehran and Washington are exchanging messages through intermediaries, despite the US previously “betraying” negotiations, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.
During Sunday’s talks, Iran insisted that shipping in the Strait of Hormuz be regulated with a toll. However, the idea has been rejected by the Omani mediators who wished to keep it open and free for all.
Iran, which maintains control over the Strait of Hormuz, has not changed its position on the matter ever since the March and April hostilities.
According to some reports, the Omanis have suggested a regional consortium to manage this mechanism without collecting tolls.
However, reports indicate that the Iranians are still insisting on a “service fee” and want the mechanism to be managed by Iran.
Additionally, Kpler data on Monday revealed that only a handful of ships — around 10 vessels — have passed through the Strait of Hormuz despite both sides pausing their attacks.
On Saturday, only three vessels passed through with their transponders switched off, while seven vessels transited on Sunday, including three Iranian-linked oil product tankers exiting the strait, according to the Reuters report.
