Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his foreign minister were involved in a helicopter crash on Sunday while crossing mountain terrain in heavy fog. The incident occurred as they were returning from a visit to the border with Azerbaijan.
The helicopter, carrying President Raisi and several officials, crashed near Jolfa, a city on the border with Azerbaijan, according to Iranian state-run media. Reports suggest that the lives of President Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian are at risk following the crash.
Rescue teams, including ambulances and armed forces, have been dispatched to search for the crashed helicopter. However, heavy rains and poor weather conditions are hindering rescue efforts in the area.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has interrupted his vacation and returned to the White House for an emergency meeting amid reports of the helicopter crash. US officials are reportedly concerned that President Raisi may have been assassinated.
President Raisi was visiting neighbouring Azerbaijan to inaugurate a dam with President Ilham Aliyev. The visit aimed to strengthen relations between the two nations despite previous tensions.
Leaders from around the world, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, have expressed their concerns and prayers for President Raisi's well-being.
