Global media watchdog, Reporters without Borders (RSF), accused Israeli forces operating in Gaza of killing 29 of the 67 journalists killed worldwide in 2025.
The number of murdered media persons has risen from 66 killed in 2024, with most of them being victims of war or criminal gangs across the world.
Since the start of the attack on Gaza by Israel in 2023, the Israeli armed forces have killed 220 journalists. Of these, at least 65 were killed while carrying out their duties.
The global press freedom body, RSF, expressed concern over the rise in journalist deaths, with RSF Director General, Thibaut Bruttin saying, “This is where the hatred of journalists leads! It led to the death of 67 journalists this year – not by accident, and they weren’t collateral victims, rather, a target of the criminal regimes.”

“Journalists are eyewitnesses to history; targeting them under the guise of collateral damage is criminal behaviour,” he added.
Gaza remains the most dangerous place for journalists this year too, where 29 journalists have lost their lives; the second most dangerous being Mexico, which recorded nine journalist deaths.
The deadliest attack so far has been a “double-tap” strike on a hospital in southern Gaza on August 25, which killed five journalists among others, including two contributors to international news agencies Reuters and the Associated Press, the report said.
While Israeli forces deny allegations of carrying out targeted killings of journalists, the media watchdog report claims otherwise, saying “Israeli forces repeatedly targeted the journalists in Gaza”.
Meanwhile, more than 503 journalists were detained in 2025 under various provisions of law in different countries worldwide, of whom 121 news professionals were imprisoned in China; while Russia detained 48 journalists.
