The leaked written transcript is said to have exposed serious concerns regarding the US-brokered peace talks regarding the Russia-Ukraine war

A leaked transcript of a phone call exchanged between European leaders and a Ukrainian delegation reveals French President Emmanuel Macron has little faith in the US supporting Ukraine in its peace mediation talks with Russia.

The leaked written transcript is said to have exposed serious concerns regarding the US-brokered peace talks regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, especially on territorial matters, in which the US has adopted a more lenient stance towards Russia.

A report on Thursday quoted exact references from the phone call that took place on Monday between the Western leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and EU politicians.

The transcript quotes Emmanuel Macron as saying that “there is a high possibility that the US will betray Ukraine on the issue of territory, without clarity on security guarantees”.

Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reportedly told Zelenskyy on the call: “They are playing games, both with you and with us.”

Merz was apparently referring to the two US negotiators, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.
Macron also appears to have warned Ukraine that the US peace proposal may force Kyiv to cede territory to Russia, without receiving any clarity on security guarantees aimed at preventing a future conflict.

The US leadership, on the other hand, has said that a negotiated settlement to the crisis is the only way to bring peace, though it has not mentioned anything about how the future relationship between the two neighbours would evolve.

In the context of geopolitics, there are no predictive indicators that would guarantee how a nation will behave, instead, there are only assumptions or hypothesis.

In relation to this nearly-four-year-long conflict, the world didn’t anticipate that Russia would launch a massive military operation against Ukraine in 2022, with 100,000 soldiers and armed divisions.

The United States appears to be acting on the same philosophy: resolve the current crisis, and let the rest belong in the future.
