US President Donald Trump has said the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran has been “all signed” and that the Strait of Hormuz will be completely open for shipping on Friday. As many as three Iran-linked oil tankers and cargo ships have passed through the strait after the US lifted its blockade, according to Iranian official sources.
Tensions between the two sides have largely subsided after mediation efforts by Pakistan and Oman. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon despite the US-Iran peace agreement. Displaced Lebanese are returning to southern Lebanon as Israeli troops and Hezbollah continue to trade fire in the area.
Earlier, US and Iranian officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, signed the agreement.
“The president wanted to sign it personally because he wanted to show his dedication to bringing the deal through to a successful resolution,” sources from the White House told reporters on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Iran is yet to respond to the claims made by Washington. However, its Parliament Speaker Ghalibaf wrote on X that Iran has taken a “significant step toward final victory” after the country’s “historic resistance” against Israel and the US.
Trump has also told reporters that Vice President JD Vance is all set to travel to Switzerland for the official signing ceremony on Friday and that the text of the agreement will be made public soon.
