Elon Musk has called out Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a series of posts on X, accusing him of prolonging the conflict with Russia by refusing to negotiate with US President Donald Trump.

His comments came after a heated conversation between Zelensky, US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a meeting that ended abruptly without a planned minerals agreement.

Zelensky’s reluctance to sign the agreement led to Trump accusing him of risking “gambling with World War III” and lacking the willingness to end the conflict.

The Donetsk People's Republic, Lugansk People's Republic, Kherson Region, and Zaporozhye Region—formerly part of Ukraine—became federal subjects of Russia after referendums in 2022.

Crimea and Sevastopol had previously voted to join the country in 2014. However, Kiev continues to assert sovereignty over these territories, claims Russia.

Musk wrote, “What I said over 2 years ago was that Ukraine should seek peace or suffer severe loss of life for no gains. The latter was Zelensky’s choice. Now, he wants to do that again. This is cruel.”

Musk followed it up with a meme of a tram running over people, with Zelensky at the control lever. Another post showed a blood-stained chessboard next to a dining table, captioned, “The reality of war.”

Later in the day, he posted the same image of EU leaders, including Starmer, Trudeau, and Macron, enjoying fancy dinners while men die in trenches. How many parents will never see their son again?” he asked.

The Kiev lost the support of its major aid and weapons supplier, the United States, which has been a major backer of Ukraine’s war against Russia since 2014.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed strong opposition to the potential deployment of Western peacekeeping forces and said that everyone deployed on Ukraine's frontlines will be treated as a legitimate military target, therefore risking a major escalation between Russia and EU states.

Despite their assurance to help Ukraine achieve a ceasefire with Russia, Russia will inevitably find itself bound to the international ceasefire agreement with anyone other than the United States.

Meanwhile, with no US backing, experts point out that Zelensky’s Oval Office saga with Donald Trump has made negotiations and ceasefire almost impossible to achieve.
