Over 2,000 dead in Myanmar quake, search for missing on.

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28 has surpassed 2,000, with over 3,900 people injured and nearly 270 reported missing.

The ruling junta confirmed the figures as rescue teams continued searching through the wreckage of collapsed buildings.

Authorities have declared a week of national mourning to honour those who lost their lives in the powerful 7.7-magnitude quake. The tremor caused widespread destruction in Myanmar and also impacted neighbouring Thailand, including its capital, Bangkok.

Rescuers are racing against time to find survivors. On Monday, a woman was pulled from the rubble of the Great Wall Hotel in Mandalay. The Chinese embassy in Myanmar reported that she was in a stable condition. Mandalay is located close to the epicentre of the earthquake, which has left thousands displaced.

In Bangkok, emergency teams resumed their search for 76 people feared trapped under the debris of a collapsed under-construction skyscraper. The death toll in Thailand stood at 18 on Sunday, but authorities fear it could rise further.

International aid, including supplies from India and the United Nations, has reached around 23,000 survivors in Myanmar. The country, already grappling with a civil war following the 2021 military coup, is facing additional challenges in delivering relief to affected areas.

A local activist group reported that over 700 worshippers were killed when the earthquake struck during Friday prayers amid Ramzan, with at least 60 mosques destroyed. However, it remains unclear if these deaths are included in the official casualty figures.
