Nepal's interim government, led by Sushila Karki, formed a three-member committee on Sunday to investigate the 'Gen Z' protests that resulted in 72 deaths and led to the collapse of the KP Sharma Oli government.
The probe committee is headed by former Supreme Court judge Gauri Bahadur Karki and includes Bigyan Ran Sharma, a former additional inspector general of police, and legal expert Bishweshwor Prasad Bhandari. Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal announced the formation of the commission at the Singhdurbar Secretariat, stating that it has been given three months to submit its findings.
The establishment of a high-level probe commission to investigate the killings in Kathmandu on 8 and 9 September was a key demand of the Gen Z movement. On Saturday, the group called for the arrest of Oli and his then home minister, Ramesh Lekhak, over their alleged role in a shootout on 8 September, which killed 19 people during the anti-government protests.
A total of 72 people, including three police officers, died during the violent demonstrations, which were sparked by public anger over alleged corruption and a ban on social media.
