North Korea has announced its most assertive counter-strategy against the United States, citing growing threats from the military alliance between the US, South Korea, and Japan.
The country claims this alliance has transformed into a nuclear-focused military bloc aimed at aggression. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting of the Workers’ Party of Korea, chaired by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as reported by state media KCNA.
During the meeting, Kim accused South Korea of becoming a staunch anti-communist base for the United States. He criticised the military cooperation between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo, calling it a serious provocation.
He stated that these developments demanded an urgent boost in North Korea’s military capabilities to address evolving warfare scenarios and strategies.
Kim outlined plans to enhance the nation’s defence capacity, emphasising advancements in defence science and technology. He directed the rapid development of the defence industry to prepare for what he described as increasing military provocations by the US and its allies.
The leader also highlighted the importance of maintaining war deterrence as a self-defence mechanism, aligning with the country’s overarching strategic policies.
In December 2023, Kim had already issued orders to accelerate military preparations, including advancements in North Korea’s nuclear programme. At the time, he expressed concerns about what he termed unprecedented hostile actions by the US.
During a meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party, he called for heightened readiness in the People’s Army, nuclear weapons programmes, and civil defence sectors.
According to KCNA, Kim described the military situation on the Korean Peninsula as severe and volatile. He claimed that confrontations between North Korea and the US had reached unprecedented levels, escalating tensions in the region.
The latest announcements come amid increased scrutiny of North Korea’s military activities and its nuclear ambitions.
