The National People's Power (NPP) party, under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, is poised to achieve a landslide victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary election held on Thursday.
Partial results released by 11 p.m. local time indicate that the NPP has garnered a commanding 70 per cent of the vote, leaving the main opposition parties trailing by a wide margin.
Early results reveal the main opposition, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), has so far obtained only 11 per cent of the vote, while the National Democratic Front (NDF), supported by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, managed a mere 5 per cent.
In a decisive win in the southern province capital of Galle, the NPP clinched over 70 per cent of the vote in the first official polling division result to be declared.
Political analysts observe that the NPP’s performance reflects an increase in its vote share since the presidential election held in September.
Should this trend persist, the NPP could well surpass the critical 150-seat threshold, ensuring an absolute majority in the 225-member Parliament.
Thursday’s election represents the first major test for the NPP, marking the nation’s first parliamentary poll following the economic crisis that shook Sri Lanka in 2022.
The snap parliamentary election has thus offered President Dissanayake’s administration a vital opportunity to solidify its mandate and push forward with recovery measures.
