As the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas enters its third day, Palestinians in Gaza have started searching for the bodies of their loved ones, believed to be under the rubble since Israel’s invasion following the October 7 Hamas assault.
Civil defence in Gaza on Tuesday said that “it has pulled 137 bodies of those killed in Israeli attacks from under rubble since the start of the ceasefire in Rafah alone.”
The rights organisations, including the United Nations (UNRWA), have estimated more than 10,000 bodies to be buried under the rubble of the concrete wasteland in Gaza following the 15-month war.
Meanwhile, at least three Palestinians have been killed and a further eight wounded by the Israeli gunfire despite the ongoing ceasefire in Gaza.
The UN’s humanitarian office says, citing information from Israeli authorities, that 915 aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday.
Furthermore, it said that Palestinian residents are returning to their ruined homes in Gaza and awaiting the delivery of much-needed food and medicines after Israeli forces ended their bombardment of the besieged territory.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 47,035 Palestinians and wounded 111,091 since October 7, 2023.
At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day and more than 200 were taken captive.
On Monday, as part of their recently agreed ceasefire deal brokered by the US and negotiated by Qatar and Egypt, Hamas released three captives, while Israel has released 90 hostages, including prominent Palestinian political leader and activist Khalida Jarrar.
