The Minister for External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, said the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 people lost their lives, was an attack on the growing economic prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir.

Jaishakar pointed to a series of terrorist attacks that emanated from Pakistan in the wake of the recent Pahalgam attack.

He made these remarks during an interview, saying the Pahalgam attack “was an act of economic warfare. It was meant to destroy tourism in Kashmir, which was the mainstay of the economy. It was also meant to provoke religious violence because people were asked to identify their faith before they were killed.”

In a strong worded response, he said, “We decided that we cannot let terrorists function with impunity. The idea that they are on that side of the border and that, therefore, sort of prevents retribution, I think, is a proposition that needs to be challenged, and that is what we did.

Jaishankar is in the US for the QUAD foreign ministers' meeting on Tuesday. He said Pakistan harbours and shelters terrorists in the social setup.

Jaishankar indirectly pointed his finger at Pakistan, saying, “The world knows where the headquarters of the terrorist organisation are; we also knew and acted on it during operation Sindoor.”

He said, “India is clear that there will be no impunity for the terrorists who commit violent acts against civilians on Indian soil.”

Jaishankar added that “we’ve also heard this for too long” – that both India and Pakistan are nuclear countries, and “therefore the other guy will come and do horrible things, but you mustn’t do anything because it gets the world worried.

Keep in mind that the terrorists shot dead 26 civilians in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam on April 22. Following this, India launched Operation Sindoor to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan.

The strikes brought two nations to the brink of full-scale military confrontations before the United States brokered the truce deal, as claimed by the United States president, Donald Trump, since May 10.

The confrontations led to a downgrading of diplomatic ties between the two nations, including India suspending the Indus water treaty, while Pakistan also responded by suspending the Shimla agreement.
