A military court in Pakistan on Thursday sentenced former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed, to 14 years in prison.

The sentence comes a year after Hameed’s court martial proceedings began, with the court finding him guilty on four counts, including engaging in political activities and violating the rules of the Official Secrets Act, the military court said while pronouncing the verdict.

“He was accused of misusing the authority, engaging in political activities, violating the codes of official secrets act, misusing government resources, and causing wrongful losses,” the statement by the court on Thursday added.

The court also said the field general court martial tried the former director general of the ISI under the Pakistan Army Act during proceedings that lasted 15 months.

The accused was given full right to self-defence; however, he failed to convince the judges of his innocence, the statement said.

Hameed, considered to have been a close ally of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan, was handed the highest term possible under the Official Secrets Act.

The verdict will undoubtedly cast doubt on the Pakistani army’s reputation, where military law and rules decide the fate of its officers and political leadership that refuses to cooperate with it. The collusion between the political leadership there and the military is well known.

Hameed’s conviction may also create a rift within the army’s institutions, including the ISI, which he led during Imran Khan’s tenure in office.

Hameed was detained in 2024 following an internal probe ordered by Pakistan’s Supreme Court into allegations of ‘Top City project scam’.

The Top City Company had been developing land near Islamabad for a private housing project.
