A new study on Pakistan’s recent monsoon fury has revealed rains are getting heavier due to climate change and making floods deadlier. The findings were released on Thursday by a group of international scientists, who study the pattern of global warming's role in extreme weather in triggering certain phenomena, including floods. According to findings, the country witnessed increased rainfall activity by more than 36 per cent as compared to 2024.

Rainfall is 10 to 15 per cent heavier because of climate change, according to researchers who analysed the precipitation from June 24 to July 23. Every tenth of a degree of warming will make rain heavier, said the lead author of the study, Mariam Zachariah.

Meanwhile, the country reported at least 300 deaths in the recent floods triggered by the heavy and intense rainfall. Reports confirmed that nearly half of the victims were children.

The study also said most of the victims were crushed by collapsing buildings. Pakistan is one among the many nations facing a heightened risk of natural disasters and dangerous weather phenomena.

"Building flood-resilient houses and avoiding construction in flood zones will help reduce the impacts of heavy monsoon rain,” the study further said.

Pakistan, which has a population of 250 million, has experienced several severe monsoon seasons resulting in widespread and destructive flooding. This year’s flooding comes after the catastrophe in 2022, when 1700 people were killed during the monsoon.
